“Minimum unit pricing”

I’ve touched on this subject before, I know, but it’s in the news at the moment so I thought I’d spend a few minutes talking about it.

‘It’ is ‘minimum unit pricing’ – an idea that the government is rather keen on whereby they do away with low price alcohol.  The reasoning behind it is that a large proportion of incidents that the police deal with involve low cost booze.
Do away with the low cost booze, and you do away with the problem…

Yeah, right.

I would suggest that they are looking at this from the wrong end.
I believe that all the trouble is caused by government policies; that the ‘trouble-makers’ are the ones with little or no money;  and that the low cost booze is simply all they can afford.

They don’t cause trouble because of the booze, they cause trouble because it’s all they can afford!

Yes, there are many alcohol related incidents on the streets – but the people on the streets are not the ones drinking the low cost booze.  The ones who buy their booze at the supermarket take it home and drink it there.  Most of them, anyway.

There will always be an element that will abuse the booze.  My contention, though, is that they are the ones who will get their drink come what may.  If they can’t afford it, they’ll steal it.  Or even do what I’ve done in the past, and make my own – no tax on that stuff!

I’ve just done a very quick, basic search, and found that you can buy everything you need to make 40 pints of lager for less than £1.50 a pint.  Sounds a lot, but you’re buying the tools, too.  After that, it’s around 25p a pint…  As an added bonus, you can make it a lot more potent than anything you’ll find in a pub, if you choose to.

Of course, nobody in government will see a problem with the idea of a minimum price – after all, none of them drink the cheap stuff!

But I’m getting away from the point.

The government believes that it’s the cheap booze that causes the problems.
I believe that it’s the government that causes the problems, and the cheap booze helps us deal with them.

What do you believe?
